Title A name given to the resource Ronald Duncan Collection Subject The topic of the resource Ronald Duncan (1914-1982) was born of Austro-German parents in Salisbury, Rhodesia (now Harare, Zimbabwe) in 1914. When World War One broke out Duncan came to South London with his mother and sister. His father was due to follow, but died of an illness before he could join them. As a boy Duncan holidayed in Welcombe, North Devon and aged 18 rented a cottage there with the hope of settling one day. In 1933 he went up to Cambridge University to read English under F.R. Leavis at Downing College. After graduating Duncan worked briefly in a mine near Chesterfield and became sympathetic with the strikers’ cause and the politics of peaceful protest. This led to him writing a pamphlet for the Peace Pledge Union in 1936, later published with a foreword from the pacifist leader Dick Sheppard. Such connections prompted an invitation to visit the Mahatma Gandhi in India in 1937. On his way back the young traveller called in on Ezra Pound in Italy. The exiled poet became a long time friend, as did the British writer and Hispanist Gerald Brenan. During the Second World War Duncan ran a community farm near Bideford in North Devon. His wife Rose Marie was an artist and their son and daughter were born during the war years. His main home was based at West Mill from 1937 and during that time visitors included Benjamin Britten, Peter Pears, the singer Kathleen Ferrier, Lord Harewood, and the glamorous actresses Virginia Maskell and Anna Proclemer. Duncan farmed, rode, fished, wrote and welcomed friends from both near and far to Welcombe including Henry Williamson, a close neighbour who had himself farmed in Norfolk. Duncan died on 3 June 1982 at the age of 68. Ronald Duncan is perhaps best known for preparing the libretto for Benjamin Britten's opera The Rape of Lucretia, first performed in 1946, but also had an extremely productive literary career producing fiction, poetry, film scripts, plays, newspaper columns and autobiographies. Duncan wrote the film script for Girl on a Motorcycle (Jack Cardiff 1968) and several plays including This Way to the Tomb (1946) and Abelard and Heloise (1961). Title A name given to the resource Jack Clemo literary and personal papers Subject The topic of the resource Reginald John 'Jack' Clemo (1916-1994) was a poet who was born in Cornwall. As a child he experienced two periods of blindness, and by the age of 19 he had lost almost all of his hearing. He left school at the age of 12. He began to write at the end of his schooldays, but for many years his only vehicle for publishing his verse and stories was a local newspaper. In 1948, he published a novel, 'Wilding Graft'. This was followed in 1949 by an autobiography, 'Confession of a Rebel', and in 1951, by his first volume of poetry, 'The Clay Verge'. Further volumes of poetry in 1961 'The Map of Clay', and in 1967 'Cactus on Carmel', furthered his reputation as a poet. He published a theological volume, 'The Invading Gospel' in 1958. By 1955, he was totally blind and, although periodically he was able to faintly hear music, he could no longer recognise speech. He continued to write and publish. His later works include 'The Echoing Tip' (1971) and 'Broad Autumn' (1975). He was awarded a Civil List Pension in 1961 in recognition of his literary achievements. In 1981, he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Exeter. In 1968, he married Ruth Peaty (1923-2007), a laundry worker from Weymouth. Description An account of the resource A selection of images from the literary and personal papers of Jack Clemo have been digitised. The complete literary and personal archive of Jack Clemo are held at the University of Exeter Special Collections. Included are all his manuscript notebooks and typescripts for prose work as well as poetry. These visual teaching aids illustrate microscopic organisms and were designed to be viewed backlit in a darkened room. Each screen is in a wooden frame, approximately 96cm high by 76cm wide. The paintings are on translucent white and coloured paper, with perforations to create highlights. Thick brown paper forms a mask so that only the image is seen, when lit from behind. It is thought some of these were created in the mid 1880's or later. Hudson's way of working is described in a handout produced by the Biology Department, University of Exeter: 'His method was to rough out the portrait of his animal in chalk on a sheet of thick brown paper and then to cut out large areas over which he pasted a thin white paper upon which he painted the appropriate parts.
