An account of the resource
This map of Exeter, based on John Hooker’s 1587 map, was published in the book ‘Libellus novus politicus emblematicus civitatum’ and is used to point out the dangers of excessive lust. The Latin and German texts describe how the female serpent bites off the head of the male. A pair of serpents are depicted in the foreground, with the walled city of Exeter in the background. This plate is possibly from a 1638 edition of the book.

Description
An account of the resource

Isca Danmoniorum is the earliest known printed map of Exeter. It was commissioned by John Hooker, the first Chamblerlain of Exeter, from the Flemish engraver Remigius Hogenberg, and formed the basis of all printed maps of Exeter for more than a century. Copies of the map survive in three versions or states. This is a facsimile reprint of State C, acquired for Exeter City Council by James G. Commins, and which today hangs in the Exeter Guildhall.
